As much as we don’t want any of our children exposed to extreme disasters, terrorism or other emergencies, there is often little we can do keep them from the realities of the world today. After the tragedy in Oklahoma City, New York and other disasters that have occurred since, we know it is critical to take a proactive approach to potential emergency situations so communities can be better prepared in the future.

Your community can become better prepared to deal with situations such as this by carefully training not only school personnel but community members such as faith-based professionals, social workers, and mental health counselors.

During four years of providing training and staff development through our Safe Schools Healthy Students collaborations, we know how critical it is to prepare our schools and community for potential disasters. We also provide K-Flash/P-Flash training for REMS grant awardees and are happy to share an outline with those of you interested in having us provide this training through your current or future REMS grant. 

You may want to take a proactive approach to this issue in your community by beginning this process or strengthening an existing one with K-Flash/P-Flash training. Included in this training:

1. One day training for service providers
2. 1/2 day organizational assistance in proactive community preparedness
3. Reproducible materials that can be shared with school and community
4. Resources for additional follow up and support
